Skiing, Boarding and snow around the world

This is not the sort of thing you usually hear from Scotland….

Patroller’s Blog “Snow Joke”:

“Back Home after pulling out from the hill at 11.00am. The ploughs were struggling even to keep a single track on the down road. The wind was not really the problem but the volume of snow falling out of the sky, I knew we should not have tried to wire up the cannon this week.

Anyway the rothiemurchus official weather station is reporting 75cm in my back garden now, oil tank is buried, soon to be followed by the trampoline and it is still thumping down. After this mornings frolics I need spotlights on my roof bars as going up the glen the snow was above my headlights, if anyone from Volvo reads this I could do with an upgrade or raising kit after getting bellied in the down road.

Up the hill there is between 1.5 to 2 metres of fresh powder on the lower slopes and zig zags and probably more further up, the snow is level with the top of the tunnel and track buried in the usual places. I would also imagine there will be avalanche risk in places we have not seen before.

If the forecasted winds materialise who knows when we will get open…

July Glacier skiing anyone?

Cheers

Colin”

This is a great little story over at the Jay Peak Resort Weblog

Raising ‘Em Jay, Starting ‘Em Young:

“Throughout the month of January we asked all new parents at North Country Hospital in Newport if they wanted to be entered in a draw to win a lifetime season pass for their new babe.  Not surprisingly, they were all keen.  On Friday, we randomly selected a winner – young Alexander Jensen who will, for the rest of his life, have free access to Jay Peak.  We’re also throwing in 5 years of ski and/or snowboard lessons and 5 years of equipment rental to get him started on the right foot.  When our EmStarr called to give his parents the good news his mom said ‘Is this a joke?’.  Once she was persuaded she wasn’t being pranked, a very excited mom-Jensen compared winning the lifetime season pass to winning the lottery.  Aw shucks.

Congrats Alexander, our First Skier of the New Year.”

What a fantastic idea….

American Ski Classic:

“March 17, 2010 – March 21, 2010

America’s original Pro/Am celebrity ski event returns to Vail Mountain March 17-20 as the 2010 Korbel California Champagne American Ski Classic takes Golden Peak by storm.

Some of the greatest names in ski racing history, including Olympic, World Championships and World Cup champions will kickoff the festivities Thursday, March 18, as old rivalries are rekindled in the Volvo Legends of Skiing Giant Slalom competition, followed by a special edition of the Bud Light Street Beat free concert series featuring Cowboy Mouth.

New this year, we bring the Conway Cup into the fold on Wednesday, March 17. In its inaugural year, the Conway Cup presented by Korbel is a community race featuring 40 four-person teams in a dual-format race.
