Day one – UK –> Geneva –> Les Deux Alpes, France
So far so good, all went very well. Trip went well, flight was only delayed for 40 minutes, car hire worked a treat (20 mins to pick it up and get on the road).
The drive to Les Deux Alpes was uneventful. I asked the GPS unit (TomTom One Europe – Amazon Link) for the quickest route and let it get on with it. One thing that was slightly odd was the GPS unit took me via the centre of Grenoble, which was a bit annoying as I hit the town at rush hour.
Bascially, the route from Geneva to Les Deux Alpes is to head toward Grenoble, via the ‘motor-way’ (two tolls), and then turn left, and left again, to head up in to the mountains. The drive from Grenoble to Les Deux Alpes took just over three hours, and I arrived early evening. The GPS unit successfully took me right to the door of the hotel, although I didn’t believe it and drove by!

The hotel, Hotel Des Neiges, is located in the far end of Les Deux Alpes, and is a small hotels on 6 floors. On the ground floor there is a ski locker room and the usual ‘under hotel’ maintenance/plant rooms, the next floor has a bar, a lounge area, a dinning area and the main reception, plus a lift to the bedrooms. The remaining ‘upper’ floors are bedrooms.
The hotel was clean and tidy. The room was OK, a bit small and in need of decoration. But considering the price I was paying, 60 Euros per night half-board, a bargain.
One big plus for the hotel is free wireless internet, which can be accessed from the lounge area, or in my case from my bedroom. A definite minus is there is no parking and cars have to be left on the street.
I grabbed the evening meal on offer in the hotel, food was good (a lot of cheese) and the meal consisted of five courses, a soup started, a salad, a main dish, cheese, and then a dessert. There was free wine (white or red) available. After the meal I decided to go for a walk around the town. Les Deux Alpes is a long thing village at the bottom of the valley with some roads running of to the left and right towards hotel complexes/chalets. In the far end of town where I was staying there were a number of bars and a surprising amount of neon lighting. One worrying point is there doesn’t seem to be much snow around.
