Switzerland invades Liechtenstein
Just discovered that Switzerland has invaded Liechtenstein! Switzerland? Neutral Switzerland? Will this cause problems for people going on ski-holidays in Switzerland or Liechtenstein? (Please note, tongue is firmly in cheek!)
In this mornings Guardian I read that Switzerland has invaded Liechtenstein. My first reaction was to re-read the headline – my second reaction was to check the date – nope, a month too early for an April fool…
Now, I know that Switzerland has one of the biggest armies in Europe (every man from the age of 18 to the mid-50s is in the army, and they keep their weapons at home!), and I also knew that Liechtenstein had no army! (The only other fact I have about the Swiss army is that they only recently disbanded their bicycle divisions.)
May be, Switzerland was after new ski areas? The theSnowSite has around 45 ski areas listed for Switzerland, and for Liechtenstein it has one – Malbun – Google Earth kml file – map it. But is that any reason to invade? Does Switzerland really need one more ski area? How will this effect skiers?
Of course, it is all a mistake. The Swiss army got lost and accidently wandered over the boarder (which wasn’t marked). They were carrying weapons, but no bullets. Plus the good people of Liechtenstein didn’t even notice….
