Day three: Cairngorm to The Lecht
The drive from the Cairngorms ski area to The Lecht is 44 miles along very pleasant roads (driving directions). Basically follow the A95, onto the A939, and take a right towards Tomintoul and Blairanmarrow.
The Lecht is an interesting ski area. As you approach the first thing you notice is the ski gear on the hill. That is, the lift/drag towers and the ubiquitous Scottish highlands ski fences (the purpose is to stop all the snow being blown off the otherwise bare hilldside).
The main ski lodge is set back from the road on the right hand side. It is a fairly modern building and wouldn’t look at all out of place in a small American ski area. The lodge houses the usual amenities, that is ski and board rental, lift ticket sales, cafe and toilets. Whilst I was there they had a rather interesting art exhibition on of local artists.
From the lodge the ski area doesn’t look that challenging. There appears to be a ridge that runs parallel to the road with a number of runs coming down towards the lodge. None of the runs look particularly challenging, there may, of course, be some more challenging terrain behind the ridge. Looking at the ski map that would appear to be the case.
I left The Lecht and headed towards the fifth and final ski area, Glenshee“> (driving directions).
