Skiing, Boarding and snow around the world

Everything for the trip to France has been booked. I have decided to base myself in Chamonix Valley (mainly because I found a hotel) and take day-trips to Morzine

Two options were explored: By train; or by air.

Flying: All the cheap flights were missed. There were some good deals to be had with KLM, but all the flights I wanted were full. One good deal I came across was an early morning flight from City Airport, London to Geneva on SwissAir (on Opodo). However, it was impossible to get to the airport in time for the flight! The best flight price was £180 return.

Train: The train from London to Annecy cost the same as the flight. One bonus to going by train was that car hire at Annecy (found via Opodo), for a week, was half the price as hiring a car from Geneva (the same car from the same company was £87 for 7 days in Annecy and £168 for 7 days at Geneva Airport).

In the end it was decided to travel to Annecy by Eurostar. The train is leaving London at 8:12 am and arriving in Annecy at 4:49 pm (local time). Total traveling time of seven and a half hours (time in France is 1 hour ahead of the UK). The drive from Annecy to Chamonix is around 40 miles and therefore should take around an hour. With luck I will arrive in Chamonix before 7 pm. The train was booked through Eurostar.

One problem encountered in booking all of this was arriving in Annecy before the car hire shut at 6 pm. It seems rather odd to close the car hire so early… May be this is because it is in the Christmas break?

I still need to book accommodation…. Guess it is time to head back to the hotel sites – ebooker, Expedia, Hotel Connect, hotels.com, Thomson Hotels, and LastMinute.
